Which California health insurance plans cover pregnancy?

– Angela O. San Diego, CA

Hi Angela,

That is a smart thing to ask as there are some important things to keep in mind if you are a CA resident and are considering becoming pregnant. First of all, it is crucial to note that in California if you are pregnant and uninsured then your application for an individual health insurance plan will be rejected until after the pregnancy. If you are already pregnant then you may want to consider a California group health insurance plan that although more expensive than an individual plan will potentially cover your maternity expenses (check with your employer or benefit administrator for specifics about your California group health plan).

Ok, if you are not yet pregnant but are considering becoming pregnant in the near future then you will want to prepare for the cost of your pregnancy. California individual health insurance plans do not cover maternity expenses automatically but many plans, such as those offered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of CA, offer an optional maternity benefit rider than can be added onto the plan for an additional cost. (Note that most maternity benefits have a waiting period of 6-12 months so be sure and keep this in mind as you compare the various maternity benefits from the different companies). This is contrasted to a California group health insurance plan that usually will cover pregnancy costs automatically within the plan without having to add on any additional benefit. (Keep in mind that CA group plans are still going to be about 2-3 times the cost of a comparable CA individual plan).

So what should you do? The smartest thing to do is to make sure that you never go without adequate California health insurance coverage and that if you are planning on becoming pregnant that you prepare a year or so in advance. You will do well to find out what the average cost of a pregnancy is at the hospital or facility near you and then use that number to plan accordingly. Also, you will be in very good shape if you make sure and compare CA health insurance quotes from at least 3 different insurance companies – don’t just jump on the first plan that you come across.
